Songs in the Key of Free, The Album is launching Fall 2020! Our stellar producers are mixing now and we're expecting the 15-song LP to be ready soon. We hope you'll consider a donation at this crucial time for Songs. We need funds for the following:
  • The incarcerated musicians cannot download the music digitally, so our most cherished mission right now is to raise funds to create 150 hard copies (a CD), with cover and illustrated liner notes to distribute to the musicians and their families
  • While the musicians cannot receive monies directly, we are planning to set up a trust for royalties that the musicians could share if/when they are released. It will mean the world to these men to be paid royalties for the heart and soul they put into these songs
  • We're planning a Launch Concert for the Album, and we're committed to paying all justice-involved musicians to rehearse for the concert. The Songs in the Key of Free Outside Band is largely made up of returning citizens, and funds can be tight for them as they come out, so we want to pay them for their time and reimburse them for transportation.
The 25 incarcerated musicians have been waiting for this day for a long time; the process of dreaming these songs together, then writing, then rehearsing, and finally recording began almost 4 years ago, in 2016, with years-long workshops inside SCI-Graterford (now SCI-Phoenix). The LP addresses mass incarceration and is a powerful missive from 25 incarcerated men to the world.
Imagine: 25 men, many of whom have spent their entire adult lives locked down, now have an outlet for their music to be heard around the world. And with our podcast, Prison Prophets, set to debut in late 2020, you'll have a chance to hear the stories behind the songs.
The transformative potential of being heard and known provides opportunities for participants to tap into the power of story to transform and heal our lives, and to access our core strengths. Music summons us back to our elemental goodness: telling our stories in song can set us free.
We're deeply grateful for any amount you can give--even the smallest amount will make a big difference. THANK YOU.
